Cooking

Cooking nutritious meals when you have moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis can be easier with these helpful hints.

Fill a pot with water after it is already on the stove.
When boiling water, place the pot on the stove first and then fill it with water using a smaller pitcher or glass. Don't try to carry or lift the pot with water in it.

Purchase pre-chopped meat or vegetables.
If chopping is difficult, purchase pre-chopped foods to make the preparation process a little easier.

Always have the following frequently
used ingredients in your kitchen cabinet:

  • Dry goods such as baking powder, baking soda, cornstarch, bread crumbs, bouillon granules, flour, sugar (granulated and brown), cornmeal, pasta, oats, rice (converted white and brown, pilaf mixes), garlic, onions, nuts, dried spices (Italian seasoning, dill, salt-free blend, cinnamon, sage, black pepper, salt, chili powder)
  • Canned goods such as roasted red peppers, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, tomatoes (diced, sauce, paste), vegetables, fruit, beans
  • Fresh produce such as packaged pre-washed mixed salad greens, chopped onions and peppers, packaged baby carrots, cut up fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Condiments such as ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, salsa, vinegars (balsamic, cider, and distilled red), oils (olive and vegetable)
  • Nonstick sprays and disposable foil baking pans for easy cleaning

Plan to have leftovers.
Make extra food and plan for leftovers. By doubling your recipe, you can create planned leftovers to freeze and have available for another day. You will be glad you have meals in your freezer on days you don't feel well enough to cook.

Give yourself a lift, not those heavy pots and pans.
Slide heavy pots and pans along the countertop rather than lifting and carrying them.

Let the dishes do themselves.
When cleaning up, use your dishwasher. If you don't have one, wash your dishes and let them drain dry before putting them away to save yourself some energy.

Use silicone muffin cups instead metal ones.
Silicone muffin cups are a great alternative to greasing and spraying pans or trying to separate paper liners.

ORENCIA® (abatacept) Important Safety Information

Indication and Usage

ORENCIA® (abatacept) is a prescription medicine that reduces signs and symptoms in adults with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA), including those who have not been helped enough by other medicines for RA. ORENCIA may prevent further damage to your bones and joints and may help your ability to perform daily activities.

ORENCIA can also make your immune system less able to fight infections, so you may be more likely to get infections or any infection you have may get worse. It is important to tell your doctor if you think you have any infections.

Important Safety Information About ORENCIA® (abatacept)

Before you receive treatment with ORENCIA, a lyophilized powder for intravenous infusion, you should tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including if you:

  • have an infection that will not go away or a history of infections that keep coming back.
  • have had tuberculosis (TB), a positive skin test for TB, or if you recently have been in contact with someone who has had TB. If you get any of the symptoms of TB (a dry cough that doesn't go away, weight loss, fever, night sweats), call your doctor right away. Before you start ORENCIA, your doctor may examine you for TB or perform a skin test.
  • have or have had viral hepatitis. Before you use ORENCIA, your doctor may examine you for hepatitis.

Your doctor may tell you to use a different way to monitor your sugar levels.
  • are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are thinking about becoming pregnant. It is not known if ORENCIA can harm your unborn baby.
